A typical electric water heater has two thermostats, which can be found near the top and bottom of the tank and are covered by metal cover plates.

You can try fixing it, firstly, through removing the upper thermostat cover plate and checking the high limit switch button. Pressed it to reset.

This is the most common problems one could experience. Before you do anything, start fixing it by checking and adjusting the temperature dial, which can be typically found on the front of the water heater.

If it still does not fix the problem, then check the base for signs of water, for it may have some water leakage. If it still does not fix the problem, try flushing the water heater tank to remove mineral deposits that might be the reason for the problem.

If still, any of the methods cannot resolve the problem, the dip tube, which supplies cold water, might be cracked or completely broken. If it’s broken, the cold water pours in at the top of the tank and mixes with the hot water, making it not too hot.

The very first thing you need to do is to check the water’s thermostat dial. Turn it toward the cooler setting and wait for a few hours. If it still doesn’t solve the problem, the following might be the problem:

The unit might not be shutting off as its set temperature, or the TP relief valve is not properly installed or broken.

The water is hot but has a bad odor and dim color

On one hand, the cause of this might be your source of water, especially when both cold and hot water has odor and discoloration. Natural minerals like copper, iron, etc. can cause discoloration in your water. Fix this by installing a water filter.

On the other hand, when it is only the hot water that is affected, this might be a result of a reaction of a water that has a high concentration of sulfates to the water heater’s anode rod. Replace your heater’s anode rod.
